A core project for Lee Laboratories has been the Center for Affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Devices (CANPBD). CANPBD developed polymer-based, low-cost nanoengineering technology that can be used to produce micro-/nanofluidic devices, cell-based devices, and multifunctional polymer-nanoparticle-biomolecule nanostructures for next-generation medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Six Core Technology Platforms were created based on the center's expertise: 

  • Affordable Nanomanufacturing
  • Self and Dynamic Assembly
  • Micro-/Nanofluidics
  • Nanomanipulation
  • Nanofiber Synthesis
  • Super-/Subcritical Fluids

Building on the six core technologies, our center developed three major research Testbeds:

  • Biosensors/-chips for Medical Diagnostics
  • Micro-/Nanofluidics and Nanoparticle-based Drug/Gene Delivery
  • Cell-based Devices and Constructs

The long-term goal is to integrate these core technology platforms with low-cost manufacturing methods, pre-clinical trials, and economic and societal analysis to create a viable production protocol that will allow us to realize the commercialization of nanobiotechnology.
